Recently Diagnosed Parkinson’s

Who should apply?
- A person who has a confirmed diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson’s by a geriatrician or neurologist within the last year.
- A person who has had no formal physical assessment for Parkinson’s by an experienced physiotherapist and physical management of Parkinson’s previously provided.
- The current service offered is an initial assessment of physical function and impairment which may take up to up 1.5 hrs after which there may be a follow-up appointment scheduled if required. In some cases, appointments may be split and provided as two shorter sessions or completed via telehealth where appropriate
- If suitable and available in your region you may be referred to a Parkinson’s specific exercise class.
Where
Currently our network of affiliated clinicians working with Recently Diagnosed Parkinson’s are available in a limited number of regions throughout New Zealand – this is something we are actively working to change, but good things take time.
We can currently refer to affiliated clinicians in Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North, Wellington, Blenheim, Nelson and Christchurch, you can see more information on our network of affiliated clinicians map.
There may be a waitlist in your region, we will acknowledge your registration and hold your details until a Duncan Foundation funded appointment is available.
How do I apply?
Registration will initiate an alert to the Duncan Foundation operations team, who will contact you.
- If your registration meets Duncan Foundation criteria, we will send a referral to the most appropriate local or experienced affiliated clinician from our network who will contact you directly to schedule an assessment.
- There is a limited number of funded sessions per person.
- To applicants who meet the above criteria, funding will be given to people on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.
